Well, I went and bought a parts car today for my project. Found it on cl, it's a '68 baja with a 1600 sp, swingaxle. Been painted, runs/drives, has no interior or glass, no title. Has a chrome tri-mil exhaust, and a solex pict 30 carb.

I have a few questions though-
1) Are the heads the only difference between a single port and dual port? Can you change the heads to convert it?

2) The motor doesn't smoke at all that I can see, but it does push oil out the dipstick hole when running. Any ideas what could be causing that?

3) The intake manifold has a second, parallel tube that drops down by the exhaust on both sides, but isn't hooked to anything on either end. Is that tube connected to the intake, or is it just an exhaust crossover?

4) How do I tell if the front end is link pin or ball joint?

If I get a few minutes, I'll go grab some pics today or tomorrow. I'm probably going to start dismantling the thing pretty soon. Gonna have a complete front beam for sale (drum to drum), swingaxle trans (drum to drum), probably the exhaust, and eventually the pan.

1, I read there are 2 studs that are shorter on a dual port at the top of the engine. (unconfirmed though, because the stud kits don't state s/p or d/p)

2, Usually it is blowby that creates excessive crankcase pressure. Can be a cheesy aftermarket breather, no breather, plugged breather or worn rings.

3, Intake manifold heater, usually blocked off or removed around here.

4, Most obvious way is ball joint upper shock tower curve out toward the wheels. Link pin are straight up and down.

Here is b/j www.chircoestore.com/c...5062f43f17

Here is l/p www.chircoestore.com/c...5062f43f17

Based on 68, should be b/j.

Hope this helps.

Is there a chance that the crankcase breather would be part of the oil fill cap? Because he's got a solid plug in the fill cap because he lost it. Where is the breather located?

Thanks DONT- I appreciate your responses!

The 2 top center studs are shorter for a dual port. If the car is a 68, it should be a balljoint unless somebody went through the hassle to change it..

AS FAR AS I KNOW YOU NEED CRANKCASE VENTALATION ON YOUR MOTOR , RIGHT WHERE YOU CAP IS SUPPOSE TO BE THERE SHOU BE A PLACE TO CONNECT A HOSE, JUST BELOW THE CAP. ON STOCK MOTOR & A PIC CARB THIS HOSE WOULD RUN UP TO AIR CLEANER TO BURN CRANKCASE FUMES THREW CARB, I JUST PUT A SMALL BREATHERON IT, WITH NO HOSE, BUT YOUR OIL OUT THE DIP IS MOST LIKELY CAUSED BY BLOWBY BECAUSE OF YOUR STYLE OF OIL CAP, AND YOUR VENT HOLE MIGHT BE PLUGGED BECAUSE OF IT.AND NO I,M NOT MAD ,THIS IS THE WAY I TYPE. LOOK MA ONLY ONE FINGER!

HEY JAMES! Just kiddin'. Thanks for the reply. I went out and looked, and this motor has no port under the oil filler to attach a hose. I can't find any semblance of a crankcase breather. The stand that the alternator sits on doubles as the oil filler- sound right?

Is there any way to check the VIN online and figure out the year of the pan? It starts with 1151, which is odd (if it's a '68), because my titled '65 pan starts with 1154.

YES IT DOUBLES,DO YOU HAVE STOCK OIL FILLER(TIN) OR AFTERMARKET, ALUM?THE STOCK ONE HAD BREATHER PORT RIGHT IN THE TIN ON TOP RIGHT NEXT TO THE OIL FILL CAP, IF YOU HAVE A AFTERMARKET OIL FILLER YOU MIGHT HAVE TO TAP ONE IN. JUST BELOW CAP (PARTWAYDOWN FILLER NECK, OR INTO YOUR VALVE COVERS,I THINK THE OIL NECK WOULD BE EASYER.SCREW IN A HOSE CONNECTER(BRASS) THEN GO TO AUTO STORE AND PICK UP A OIL BREATHER OUT OF A CHEVY VALVE COVER THEY MOUNT WITH A SMALL HOSE CLAMP. THEY LOOK NICE AND ARE SIMPLE AND CLEAN MOST HAVE CLEANABLE FILTER. WHAT DO YOU THINK GUYS. DOES HE NEED SOME VENTING??? AND PLLLEEEAAASE!!!!call me jim

Well then, this pan must be older than '68. Plus it's linkpin and not balljoint.

Here are the parts for a complete breather system.

filler neck www.chircoestore.com/c...42faceca98

breather www.chircoestore.com/c...42faceca98

Then mount nipples on the top of your valve covers, www.chircoestore.com/c...42faceca98
run hoses from v/c to upper fittings on breather, then the drain to the filler neck.

If you want quick and cheaper and have the right air cleaner, mount a hose from the filler to the air filter, or clamp on a small breather like Jim said, but then the oil mist the escapes will still coat your engine.

Here's a pic of the filler neck. Now that I removed the plug, I see that it's threaded. Thanks again to DONT for his prompt replies.

Oh- and I know you're going to give me a hard time about that wire hanging there doing nothing. I'm going to remove it- today, after I cleaned up the motor, I accidentally pushed that connector against the alternator, and it's HOT! It goes to the starter solenoid. Anyone have any idea why this wire would be run back to the carb area and then not connected to anything???
