I've been working on a body off baja for just about a year now. I purchased a rolling pan from someone awhile back. It was a 62 that had been converted to ball joint beam for some reason. Anyhow, I had a Thing beam in my garage so I bought it.
Today, I was installing the body back onto the pan and ran into some problems. The forward body mounts were resting on the beam fine, but the body wouldn't seat on the "hump" in front of the pedals. I cut off the forward body mounts and the body seated beautifully!
After whistling zippity doo-dah day out my rear-end while happily bolting down ALL the body bolts, I find out my steering shaft wont align with the steering coupler. The shaft is about 1/2" lower and cant be raised enough to be mated together.

Do you guys know if a u-shaft off of a 71 will do the trick? Do you know if the diameter of the shaft on my 62 is the same as a 71? I know I may have to do some fab, but lookin for some ideas.

The shaft diameter is the same on all of the bugs I have ever messed with. If you go with universal joints, you will need to put a bearing i the lower part of the column. You can use an upper bearing from a 66 & earlier and it will work fine.

Does this bearing press into the bottom of the column?

You might just need to rotate your steering box on the beam to get it to line up. If someone changed to a balljoint on a '62 pan (can't imagine why) then it may be misaligned or they rotated the box to line it up for what they were using it for. If the beam came out of a thing the box is angled up to line up with the higher steering wheel.
