What kind of work have you done to it recently? Did this problem just pop up out of nowhere, or has it been this way for awhile?

what "stock" carb do you have? Did you check the idle cutoff?

assuming your idle solenoid is hooked up and working ie;it clicks when you touch the wire to it with the key in start?
no vacuum leaks?
and when it starts up after dying, does it act flooded or starved or?

Re adjust the points. Depending on the the thickness of the card he may have the adjustment way off.

What is it .016" gap?

YES ON THE GAP,, I THINK YOUR WIRE CAME OFF YOUR CUT OFF SOLENOID,, LOOK FOR A WIRE JUST HANGING AROUND, COMES FROM COIL TO CARB FOLLOW WIRES FROM COIL ,,SEE THAT THEY ALL RUN SOMEWHERE AND NOT JUST HANGING THERE!

Alos look to see if you have and air leak, Idle problems seemto show up this way. Look at all sections of your intake all the way down to the heads. If it runs fine of idle that is an option.

Also check your floats and fuel pump. some time you pump will not push the fuel needed to keep it running at idle but once you wind it up a little the fuel pump can keep up. Last look at electrical, bad alt or gen when the engine is running slow your not making the volts to keep the car running at idle.

Here is a rule check every thing and find out what it is not not what it is. once you get used to checking all the systems things will start to clear up. And the problem will show up. more than likly not were you were looking for it.

Yeah. Sounds to me like the original problem's the idle cuttoff solenoid either pooped out or the wire came off. (brass things non the left side of the carb. Should have a wire attached. If you have someone turn the key on but don't turn it over you should hear that puppy click. no click means it's dead or your wire's broken. You can "hack" the solenoid by tearing the actuator out and screwing the body back on, or you can go get a new one for around 20 bones.

As for the points, regap them.

Once both things are happy you shoudl be able to go go go!

if it happened after bouncing around in the dirt, I'd first check the needle and seat for either a particle of dirt or being loose, maybe even the injection tube...might have fallen out and you swallowed it. But, before all that you gotta get your spark back. I think your gap is now way way too wide. Only change one thing at a time grasshopper Smile
