Hi,

I found your site while surfing for Baja Bugs. I currently own a `03 Chevy Silverado Ext cab Z71 4x4 truck. I looking seriously at Baja Bugs because of the outrageously high gas prices we are experiencing. I can no longer afford to drive my truck every day because of its sorry gas mileage. Only 17mpg highway, much less city. This bug will become my new daily driver. I want to serve dual purpose street/off road. I will also drive it on long trips. I currently live in Massillon, OH, but may take a job in Saltillo, Coahuila, Mexico (Northern Mexico). Can you help me with where to start on my new project?

get a baja of like craigslist or the samba.
also you want to get the right stuff and the guys on here can tell you everything that you need to get and what not to get and it all depends on what kind of money that you are willing to spend on your baja.
the guys on here can definitely help you.

for good gas mileage and if driving on long trips you want a healthy, reliable motor, and you need to maintain it, and you may want a larger fourth gear to lower your rmps, saving you gas.

Bigger tires. You go faster at lower RPMs.
But you need power to turn bigger tires. bad gas mileage.
More power means less reliable.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I will probably be doing more on-road driving than off-road at first. I currently live in North East Ohio and want to be able to make it through deep snow if need be. I may take a job in Northern Mexico and don't know what the roads will be like there. I do expect there will be some off road driving as I may have to visit some of the smaller villages or have to reach someone in the mountains.

Based on the above info, where do you fellas suggest I start? Should I build a cool super and then sell it or should I just start with a standard and go Baja?

Thanks again 333,

I've been checking out some Cal look bugs. They seem pretty cool too(yes I know they are not for off road). What is a street Baja? I've seen some folks talk about building them.
