If nothing was done and it started running lean check for cracked boots vacuum leak at the end castings or manifold, that is important cause leaning it up will not fix the problem if there is a leak. If not then yes some adjustments are in order and also check the timing as suggested by mg_277. If you are running stock push rods then adjust to 006 if chro molly go loose 0 but don't just loosen for the sake of loosening.

Oh heavens yes. Plug that nipple off. I'm not exaggerating when I way that you will destroy a VW engine in a matter of a few miles (maybe even sooner than that) if you run it too lean and/or overheat it. WHen you say it's running hot, do you have temp gauges, and if so, what are they reading?

you sure it was #1 cylinder bad valve seat, not #3? Left front, closest to the driver is #3. just checking.

"Loose zero", or "Soft Zero" refers to running your valves with no play at all between the rocker arm and the valve at all. When you adjust the valves with chromoly pushrods, you want to run the adjustment tight enough that there is absolutely no movement between these parts, but loose enough that you can grab the pushrod between your thumb and forefinger and swivel it when the rocker arm adjuster is tightened down. Do this, of course, when the engine is cold.

BTW, I wouldn't run chromoly pushrods unless you really need to... like if running a hot cam, ration rockers, and dual springs. I'd run the aluminum pushrods on most engines.
