I have always thought the Baja's looked awesome but have never really looked into getting one. I saw this 1969 fixer upper on the side of the road and got a wild hair and bought it.
My buddy who is the maintence guy at work knows them pretty well (I know very little about working on vehicles but he is a really good teacher) feels like it has a lot of potential. He wants to start with a new exhaust and tinker with the carb (if we can't get it running smooth he suggests a new webber. He has all the equipment to paint it so we will do that as well. the inside has had some work done and it has disk brakes on the front and a bus trans axle on the back. A couple of things that I like are lights on the top and what about after market AC. I will not be able to drive it to work in the summer here in AZ if I can't keep cool. I work in sales and can't show up all sweaty.
Any suggestions. Oh I paid $1200. I'm not sure if that is high or not.

sweet, thats what im looking into buying, a fixer uper for 2k and under (canadian) but most likely will not find one Sad

I have a question to ask others as well. The 2 green lights ( or 1 green one red for oil) in a beetle are very important for oil but I dont know what the other is for.
Im one who very rarely looks at gauges (thank god for the gas dinger in my truck). I just got inspired by that last night and was thinking If a could add a dinger to the oil light because I know i wouldnt see the green or red light even if I had it mounted on my rear view miror.

I was wondering could you replace the oil presure sensor with a oil presure gauge in the same hole? If not is it possible to add one?

also i do not have a baja yet but im tring do broden my knoledge on these cars.

Yes you can run a pressure guage from where your sending unit was. Some run a T and use both, I just use a mechanical guage.

VDO sells a sender that will do both oil PSI and idiot light. I use that in my car. I hve a red light hooked next to the oil PSI guage on the car.

2 senders would be good too, if one went bad you always have the other as a back up.

the 3 lights I think are High Beam, Oil PSI and Gen/ALT/Busted fan Belt and then you have the "B" Bomb light in the dash for brakes.

for off road lights, get a baja light bar at Karls, or order from chirco. $30 or so. it holds 4 lights. just have to pick up some lights and wire em in. (a pair of 5" 100watt halogen spots at autozone and walmart for $30. thats what i run). then harbnoe frieght for the 55w halogen floods for the bumper or reverse lighting.

Years ago I heard racers wiring a relay to idiot lights and horns so they would not miss them. Might be an idea for you, but remember your horn would blow at each start up until your car is running.

Thanks for this info as well, but i was just tlaking about idiot lights for the oil presure, and hocking up a little dinger thing.

dont get a webber unless they are duals. just get a new pict or bronsol carb from someone online or local vw place. if you have a 30-31 step up to the 34 if you can, and get the adapter. out of the box they usually don't need much tuning if any. mine never did anyways. the bus tranny will give you plenty of torque for 30 inch mudders with that lil carb, LOL.

looks like you got a real alt also so thats a good thing. get a new aircleaner if you plan on doing any hard core off roading or steeeeeeep hills. that oil bath monster is heavy and full of oil. make sure you get a quality filter if you can afford it. get a small tube for the float vent tube in the center of the carby, 2-3inch should be enough.

I like hitting loggin roads doing 50+ so it gets rough at times.

I would get the BERG oil temp gauge before a oil pressure sender. if you get the pressure gauge, make sure it is the electrical sender type and not the tube. I know people have the tube, but it sucks cause you have 20 ft of oil tube in yer car and if it get a hole or cracks it will piss oil everywhere.



69 my fav year. dual spring plates and they seem tougher in 69 and 70. had a few of them. there is nothing wrong with that exhaust as long as there are no holes, rust is purty.
