hey so ive got a 1641cc that needs a good tuning. the specs are: 1641cc, 31pict carb, single port, carb main jet .5 larger, engle w100 cam. rite now i have the timing at 30 degrees. the engine stumbles on acceleration and it just now backfired when i punched the gas a little while i was driving. i was wondering what i should set the timing, valve gap, and point gap to. thx!

Check out this tech tip. It works I have done it. Sometimes it doesnt remove the hesitation all the way but it will help.

Find a good used later model vaccum/ mechanical advance distributor you get better acceleration, better fuel mileage and it will retard under a load.
The .002 difference in valve lash won't matter.
Points adjusted correctly and tight distributor shaft?
Is you pre heat functional?
Is the acc. dump tube in place and adjusted?
Does the acc pump squirt fuel as soon as the throttle is cracked and keep spraying.

i will check my points. what should they be at? my pre heat tube is disconnected because of my tri-mil exhaust. the acc.pump could also be a bigger factor with this im sure it needs adjustment.

.015" for the point gap. You need to add the preheat to the Trimill. Trying to tune it at any temp under 100 degrees outside without preheat is a waste of time. The heat keeps the fuel atomized as it travels through the long intake runners. Once it gets cool outside the intake will ice up.
