Major changes are being proposed for the Tonto Forest that will affect off road travel. Google USFS Tonto travel management. Check out the map and read how to reccomend why a proposed closure should be kept open. Also note the open information meetings. Your reccomendations need to be sent before Dec 4,2009 and follow thier reccomended format as listed in the Tonto National Forest Travel Management Highlights to have the most weight. Please attend the Mesa Meeting at the Broadway Rd. Recreation Center 59 E. Broadway Rd. Mesa from 7-8:30 pm. There are several proposed closures at the Rolls that will not be good. Butcher Jones entrance will be closed permanantly and this cannot be changed but the others may if it can be shown they are needed for saftey or completing a loop and there is no excessive environmental reason for closing it. PM me with your email address and I can send you the PDF files I have from the USFS web site.

On top of that cove 1 is scheduled to close. Go to the link I posted. There are clear instructions on how to write a request to keep open a trail. Emphasis it is part of a loop, you have used it for years and want your family to be able to use it,safey issue quickest way to get out ogf the area , offer to help maintain it, etc and reference its route #.

Forget about the Butcher Jones entrance its closure is preordained.

Those are the proposed closures. I will be going to the Mesa meeting. I could not find a way to make a direct link. The meetings have full size maps so you get a better idea how the trails and roads link up. These are public information meetings. I encourage everyone who can to attend and see how this affects our riding areas. We have until Dec 4th to send in reccomendations why a trail should remain open. I went to the Globe meeting. Oddly enough our best allies may be ranchers. They are really concerned since many of the proposed closures block access to feed feed troughs and natural springs. I would like to see a properly formatted letter sent by everyone from AZBAJA by November 30th. We need a very strong anti closure to counteract the Sierra Club and other such groups.

First off, I don’t want any closures. That being said, I can fully understand why they are being proposed. Too many A-holes are not staying on the trails and seem to relish in destroying things (cars, trails plant life) out there. If we are going to convince anyone that these areas need to stay open, we are going to need to offer solutions. I realize that they don’t have the budget to have more rangers out there; does anyone know if they have a volunteer program? My thought is that we could show that we are willing to help.

I'm a member of TRAL (Tonto Recreation Alliance) our members work with the Mesa USFS. We have installed kiosks, disseminating information and built the pipe fence at Probocito (The Rolls). I can get you the date of our nest meeting which is usually the first Tuesday of the month at 7pm at the USFS office off of Higley Rd. Currently we are working at The Rolls, Sycamore and Mesquite Creek. Our goal is to get 25 more TRAL volunteers by the end of the year. We do projects with and independent but coordinated with the Mesa USFS. Please consider joining as these are areas most of us use on a regular basis.

I am also a member of the OHV Ambassador program sponsored by the AZ Game and Fish, USFS, BLM, AZ States Parks, Arizona Sheriffs and several OHV groups.
The OHV Ambassadors do meet and greets, repair projects and patrols at designated test staging areas. All these areas have improved dramatically just by the effects of the meet and greets. There should be a new recruitment early next year.

The Tral meeting is on Dec 1st at the Mesa USFS office at 5140 E. Ingram St. east of Higley Rd. Same place where you get the Bull Dog Canyon permits.

I missed seeing a couple of people at the Tral meeting tonight. We are having a new member orientation meeting this month at the Mesa Ranger station. Sent me a PM if you are interested.

Google USFS travel management maps to see if your trails are in the newest proposals. These are only suggested changes. Public input is possible up to DEC 4th.
