I currently have the kit that has filter mounted to oil pump cover (filter sits horizonatlly to the left)...
Could I just get one of those spin-on sandwhich adapters to run the oil lines to/from the cooler?

You could. There used to be a kit for the T-4 that worked that way.

I'm a big fan of those filter/pump combos, and have been running them for years. I thought of that exact same thng once, and actually even bought the adapter. After looking very closely at it, I dcided against it. The holes to let the oil in and out were quite small and looked very restrictive. It made me real nervous, so I crawfished on the whole idea and went a different route.

I was reading about how they full-flow type 3's the other day, and I might try that on an engine some day. It was really cool. On a T3, you don't have any room to pump the oil out at the filter and then back behind the engine because the fan shroud interferes with it. They drill a hole in the side of the case by where the oil pressure sender is on a T1 and put a plug in between them to force the oil out an back in. I wouldn't try that with an assembled engine, though.

Scares me to and it is not even my engine. It does not take long to drain a running engine of oil when the plastic hose rubs through on a sharp piece of metal.

yeah I put 300psi rated hose to the metal line it goes to. I'm thinking I convert it to electronic pretty soon here

anyone ever heard of even having this? every VW mechanic I've gone to has said the same thing..."what the hell is that for?" lol

Sounds like the ole 'mechanical' guages... I had a ford truck with one that did get cut ... didnt run out of oil but foot was showered with hot oil for about 5 seconds till I turned it off and coasted anyway..

I think this is not full flow but doing it anyway as it is much easier for now.. plus if head temperature guages get hooked up I will have some warning, and if oil cooler gets harmed you can just spin off filter, spinoff adapter and reassemble... filter being inside cage will give some insurance..
