Is there any way to widen the stance of a swing arm rear end even a few inches? I thought of minimum backspacing rims, but that would only get me about an inch or so. Just wondering if there is any solution that might come close to matching up with a 6" wider front beam. Any advice is appreciated, thanks guys.

i'm not sure if there is any way to widen the stance of a swing, you may want to consider just switching over to an IRS trans with wider arms like 3x3's or something like that, IRS will keep your tires straight up and down too so they wear evenly, i'm hoping to switch my swing over to that setup soon, it wouldn't take much.

are you just looking to get a wider footprint in the rear? you could go with a wide wheel and tire setup too. Good luck Tmaxxbuster Cool

Yeah, i just wanted to get a little wider stance out of her. Even just 1.5-2 inches each side would be plenty. I guess i'll invest in some of the rims i mentioned earlier and see how that turns out.

I've considered the switch to irs because i have three irs bugs in the yard that could donate a few parts to the job, but for now i'm looking to keep expenses down as much as possible. I also hate having downtime on my bug, I'd rather be driving her! Smile

I just think it's kind of weird that they don't make axle tubes that are just a bit longer.. that would make all this so much more simple.

Reduction boxes from a bus. Samba has em anywhere from 100 to 300. and if you lay them side ways you get a longer wheelbase too.

someone correct me if I'm wrong but don't redux boxes make you 3" wider on each side?

I don't know the exact dimensions, but my last rail had a regular swing axle and my current one has the redux boxes. It is noticeabley wider than a Type I swingaxle.

Redux boxes are wider than beetle axles, but keep in mind you will have to flip the differential carrier in the trans to run redux boxes, otherwise you will have 4 reverse gears. Cool I will make adapters for redux box trannys to bold into a bug, $100 for the pair. Here is a pic of my baja with redux boxes.

That's cool Bugzyla Cool do you know how to lay them down sideways?

dustymojave was talkin about it over on SCB.

putting on Bus Reductions will not increase travel substantially if they are upright. If laid down like QRP's, they will give a little more travel. Fenders need clearance out back as the wheels come up further back in the wheel openings.

Keep in mind that rims with a huge off set will ter up your brake drums on a swing axle car. I know and have a small stack of Stipped out Brake drums to prove it.
