The AzVC is planning an overnight trip to Box Canyon for Presidents Day Weekend, February 19, 20, 21. Mike (ikill6453) will be out scouting this weekend for a spot off the main road large enough for group camping and will be making a map.
This is on BLM land so make sure your State Trust Land permit is valid. There is over 200 square miles of desert to explore and lot of things to see.

yes... perri for all the pics can you remember where they were at or the names of the mines? we can make a map for members to plan a route to see what we know are there.
i am planning on finding a place about 4-6 miles in (east ) off of 79 going south from florence juction, turning in at a flag pole parking lot. this is a well know parking place for many many people for this area. i would like to find spot in off this dirt road to get away from 70% of the dust and traffic, and just have our area to circle the wagons and enjoy. i will post some pics of the area, and lets hope i can find a good spot.
right now i am thinking the temps will be better than perfect just like the last play day at sycamore...
and of course if anyone in the club knows of a "hidden camp site" in that area.... let us all know.
on a sad note, after a great 10 months of being unemployed, i found a job and dont have the free time like i did. but now i can build a nasty baja...... plans have been made......

okay, found 3 great spots to aim for next month and they all are only 3 miles in off the 79. large flat areas, all great sites.
directions to the estimated base camp/meeting place for the weekend of feb. 19-20, 2011
from the florence juction turn off head south from the 60 on 79 go approximatly 5 miles, there will be a unused flag pole with a parking area on the left (east side) of the road. gps N33^10'43.7" W111^21'06.1"
from this point the road is a grated flat road, go east approximatly 3 miles east. the road is maintained and its not too bad. turn south into the camp/meeting area and pic a spot. the area will be used by others so you may have to look for signs. gps N33^11'27.9" W111^18'07.5"
having friends with motorhomes and 5th wheels, there is nothing out here that i would any problems with.... i picked this spot with long trailers and turning around and access to all. far enough off the road the small trees block the dust from people going down the road.
here is the turn in to the camp/meeting site....nice and flat...
this is going to be great... i cant wait... with any luck i will be out friday to secure the camp/meeting site. as the time gets closer to the weekend plans will develope.

Looks nice! Do you think towing a baja out with a Uhaul dolly would be a good idea?

It would work but a tow bar would be cheaper. If you can't find a used one, Chirco has new ones for $80.00.

I have a tow bar in storage. Needs to be cleaned up. Just thought it wouldbe a good idea if the front suspension blew. Anything special need to be done to use the tow bar? Steering wise? (Sorry for the off topic)

Without a left front spindle axle stub I towed my rail with a tow bar 45 miles from Lower Sycamore Creek to Chandler. I drove it to the truck pulled the backing plate and turkey legs for the ride home on pavement.

i have no idea what to challenge you baha ha ha ha's with but since the last play day/outing there was only 1 baha ha ha ha......jwh was the only one brave enough to show up.
since the RAILS will out number you baha ha ha ha's.... there is no way you baha ha ha ha's can pull together and get more of you, than the more popular RAILS, i have nothing to worry about. so... i challenge all baja's to show up feb.19-21 anytime....
(this blaten attempt to get people to show up is the best that i can think of)
alot of people are asking what kind of trails are out there... if you go to the AZV web site....www.arizonavolkswagonclub.com .... and look on the trail scale...in the upcomming runs forum,
i would personaly rate 80% of the trails a 2 or 3... there are some selected 4's.
hey if MY RAIL can do it possible, you baha ha ha ha's can try... lol
c u there.... challenge....

80% of the trails are 2 wheel drive. As long as the vehicle has a skid plate and passes a safety check one should have no problems as long as they pay attention to where they are.

You need the State Tust/BLM permit. It is a good tens time cheaper than the fine for not having it.

get your state trust land permits, its cheap insurance. read the postings called " warning to off roaders all of us" this event is on state trust land!!
you still have time to get your permits.
