Yes, those are tires behind my car. I work for Redburn Tire Co. Most of those big tires weigh more than all three of those VWs combined. Shocked

I'm not sure if the 1600 will turn them. you might look at a good set of 31x10.5s.

Engine tins came back from powder coat, so I put them on last night. Got the firewall buttoned up & put the peel & seal on, which quieted it up a lot back there. Also got my harnesses in, just gotta finish the tube work inside & get some door panels. Next order of business is getting the trans back in & finding some axle shafts for cheap. I tried to replace the boots on the ones I've got & ran into an issue getting the retaining clips put back in. The ends of the shafts are all mushroomed out won't allow the clip to fully seat.

"...mushroomed out won't allow the clip to fully seat."

You could try a small file to open it up for the clip to seat in.

Duh, guess I didn't think of that because I was so frustrated with putting together grease covered CVs 20 times after they'd fall apart if I looked at them funny.

Thanks for the tip!

Done that many times. I like a small triangle file for the spline grooves and a small flat file with a cutting edge for the snap ring groove. DO NOT make the snap ring groove wider.

Been a while since I updated this thread. A lot of progress has been made since I last posted. I got a used IRS trans from Arizona Transaxle exchange a few months ago & surprisingly, it works! It's a tad noisy, but has all the important things, like forward & reverse gears. It's held up to 2 dune trips so far & multiple trips to work & around town. It'll come out to make room for a bus trans at some point, but for now, it's doing it's job.

Finally got door panels & carpet installed as well as cheapo bedliner on the floors. I rebuilt the carb a few weekends ago, did some modifications to the exhaust for the intake heater & she's running much better now. Still have to play with the choke adjustments, but she's been running quite well, even on 45º mornings. I am thinking of adding some seat heaters, gets a bit chilly with all the drafts & no source of heat in the car.

I also got new rear tires to replace the 13 year old ones that were on there. Did a rebuild on the rear shocks & also re-valved them to work better with the weight of my car.

I also got my license plate in, lot of people get it, some don't.

I also did some surgery on the fenders, the rear tires were starting to self clearance the fenders while at speed out at the dunes. After I cut the rears, the fronts looked a bit odd, so they went under the knife as well.

The car still doesn't have a name yet, but it did find a mascot while out at the dunes last time.

I also reworked the crankcase breather system to include the valve covers, ditched the mechanical fuel pump for a 3psi electric Facet pump, put in a Sand Seal & a bunch of other stuff I've forgot over the past few months.

I'm going to sand the car down after dune season ends & paint it. I've decided on a color & I'm going to roll it on. And yes, I do mean a paint roller like you use on a house. I've been doing some research on it & the results are far better than would be expected from using a paint roller. That and the fact that I don't have to make a disaster in my garage again, will be awesome.

I also bought some Centerline knock offs from Biblethumpincop that I'm in the process of refinishing, so once I get that done & get some new lug nuts, I'll be ditching the trailer wheels... Razz

The end of Stage 1 of this build is finally within sight. The saving of funds, gathering of parts, has already begun for stage two. A one piece front end, lots more tube work, 3x3 arms, coil overs, bus trans & a hair dryer are all in this car's future...

Making some more progress. Doing some dune prep this weekend.

Actually got the wife to come out & help run some wiring for the whip & dust lights. She was out there for nearly an hour last night!!!! Razz

I finished the wiring today, added some more dome lights in the back of the car, changed the oil to 30w (think the 15w40 was too thin after it warmed up as I started to develop all kinds of oil leaks after I changed the oil) & a few other odds & ends. Tuesday I also ditched the crappy square EMPI tin air filter housing for a K&N & an adapter. Found out the hard way that the sucky tin unit wasn't sealed up very well & would let sand down the carb.

Whip light (Actually purple, camera made it look blue)

Dust lights: (I'll be switching the amber out for an LED version this week)

Air filter & adapter:

I've also been having some fuel tank breather issues. I had finally got all the fuel tank leaks fixed (replaced the filler neck hose, sealed a couple cracks in the tank itself) and I started to notice the car would make a weird coffee machine bubbling noise after I shut it off. It took me a while to track it down (my hearing isn't so good, so it's hard for me to tell exact direction of noises) & it ended up being my fuel tank bubbling. After a bit of thought, I finally figured that the fuel pump was drawing a vacuum on the tank after I drove the car, now that all the leaks were fixed & the tank had no way to breathe. I tried a vented fuel cap, but that only resulted in dumped fuel all over the side of my car during hard left turns.

I decided to try tapping the tank for a brass barb & running a dirt bike style check ball breather. I put it on with the supplied 3" hose & it seemed to work, but the fuel would still splash out a little bit & I'd smell gas inside the car. So I cut the 3" hose off & ran a few feet of fuel line up to where the antenna used to be, then capped it with the check ball breather. So far, so good.
