Sound deadening. Such a large, unreinforced (stiffened?) piece of sheet metal acts like a drum when introduced to vibration from the engine, tires or road surface. It just quiets the thing down.

Hhhmmm.
That got me thinking. Maybe I'll do the same before I put the headliner in.
Hopefully I'll have enough material from the padding kit I bought.

I bought that thin 1/4 inch foam from the fabric store. I think they use it for quilt making. I comes in rolls.

Stuff worked great for me.

I really like this idea! Once I get my cage painted I may try and tackle it...

Anybody have any luck with sound deadening for the engine and transaxle? I'm considering Dynamat, it's on the pricey side though.

I hadn't heard of Dynamat 'till now fast_1. Thanks for the tip. I was going to use this stuff I have a roll of, that's similar to what I scraped out of the back of my Baja when I removed all of the original carpet, tarboard, etc. Didn't really want to use it. It's that crap that looks like foil on one side & recycled carpet on the other. So I googled Dynamat, and it ain't cheap at around $10 a square foot (Xtreme), but it sure looks like a better - & cleaner - way to go for the rear area over the transaxle and in front of the engine as well as the roof. The tech page says it insulates acoustically as well as thermally. Looks like a great solution to a problem that's really been buggin' me. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Guess I kinda mis-read what meangreen was askin' when he started this thead, ooops.

I think Dynamat is used a lot for cars with obnoxious stereos, but it seems like it would work for cutting down on engine/transaxle noise. I think what was used on the Chirco baja for the roof is probably a better idea for the roof. It's cheaper and hopefully easier to install, seems to look better to.

You guys think the foam would work with a rattle can adhesive? Although I could use it, don't wanna really invest in that right now. A compressor to run the spray gun would be helpful too, and perhaps an air ratchet, and an impact wrench... The list goes on and on. Crying or Very sad Someday.

Get the high quality spray adhesive and follow the directions and it will work. Buy the cheap stuff from Walle word and get poor results.

There is a company in Phoenix that makes a couple different sound deadening materials for automotive use. They are pricey, and I haven't used them yet, but have been researching and thinking about going this route for my baja before I put in a new headliner. Check them out...seems to be pro grade audio stuff.

On the last baja i built i used spray in foam from home Depot. To put it on i got a rubber glove and covered it with vasaline. In one had i sprayed the foam the other and I took the glove and spread the foam and kept it from going everywhere. It took a bit of practice but it worked ok. After it dryed I took a knife and sander and shaped it. Then i took it to the apolstry guy and had him put in the headliner. It made it a ton more quiet. I did the same kind of thing to the doors and pannels throughout.
