Going to have Don throw a 5 rib together for me. I was thinking of going with the 3.78, 2.54, 1.48, .82 gears in it. Using 33" tires and the ring and pinion are 4.86. Engine is a 1776 w/ a single weber and 110 cam.
Weddle Sportman gear ratios:
2nd: 2.25, 2.36, 2.46, 2.54
3rd: 1.48, 1.58, 1.65, 1.70
4th: .82, 1.04, 1.13
Thoughts?

This would be my compromise for highway driving with 33" tires and 4.86 rp.
Weddle gears (assuming the 4.25 is still available)
4.25 first 2.54 second 1.48 third 1.13 fourth 54 mph @3000 rpms
72 mph @4000 rpms, 89 mph @5000rpms
It might be cheaper to use the 3 rib transaxle with 5.36 rp with 3.78 first, 2.06 second (both stock) 1.48 third and 1.09 forth 50 mph @3000 rpm
67 mph@4000 rpms, 84 mpg @5000
For strictly off road I would stay close ratio
with a 5.36 rp 3.78, 2.06, 1.58, 1.21 45mph@3000 rpm, 61 mph@4000
with 4.86rp 4.25, 2.54, 1.70, 1.30 47mph @3000 rpm, 62 mph @ 4000
A 1776 needs as much help as posible "motorvating" 33 inch tall tires on a Baja. The better the rpm range of the cam matches your driving speeds the better it will work. In one Baja I ran the w 130 cam in a 1776 with a stock geared 3 rib T-2 transaxle and 30" tall tires it was fun but below 15 mph in 1st gear and 25 in second there low speed finese did not exist. Being in the right gear all the time was a must. If you have not yet built the engine sleeve the lifter bores and use an Engle VZ 14 cam (FK 41 if your heads flow at the cams lifts), stroking it 76,78 or 82 mm will also help. Custom ported heads with small ports but high air velocity heads also help.
VW used both the 5.36 rp and shorter 14" tires to get the first bay buses moving with 50 hp.
Duplicating those overall tire/gear ratio aspects helps. From there closing them up and lowering them helps a lot.

Don has a special right now on two 3 rib boxes for $700 and $750. Both with superdiffs and close ratio 3rd and 4th.
One is 3.78, 2.06, 1.48, 1.17
The other is 3.78, 2.06, 1.58, 1.22
Which one should I get? I'm leaning toward the one with the 1.17 4th gear as it's $50 cheaper and is the best compromise of onroad and offroad.

I told them to hold the one with the 1.17 4th gear for me.

You'll like the 1.17, the 1.30 fourth is a bit low for highway driving. Even if it was $50 more I would of bought thre one with the 1.17.
The 1.17 fourth gear nets 52 mph @3000 rpms and 69 mph @ 4000 rpms.

On my way right now to drop it back off with Daryll. I'm working constantly until the offroad trip and the only way its going to get done is if I don't do it.
