hey guys, this is my first car and bug Smile
it isnt exactly a project/build, it more like a finished build, but i will still save to get some more stuff, like some bumpers, better trans, smaller front wheels, and some other details.

right now im in the process of cleaning this baby up, i allready cleaned most of it (it was full of grease and stuff inside) but its still able to shrug off a little more dirt Smile

i need opinions, what size of engine do i have? (if you can determin from the pics [which i doubt]) i think i have a swing axle trans, but im not sure, the guy said it was a '95 so i dont know what to belive. i would gladly accept any advice on the wiring, i only have the engine basics, 6 spotlights, and 2 tailights that i dont think they are working.... oh and a horn Very Happy (and i belive the guy whom i bought it from said it had electronic fuel injection, can someone confirm that?)

well any comments accepted Very Happy

PS: is that a BJ or a KP front end? actually, this might sound dumb, but can YOU tell me everything you know after seeing the images Embarassed

Let me try to answer as best I can.
1) I'm not that well versed on size of engine you may have viewing the pic but I bet some one here can
2) Yes, you have a swing axle
3) I'm not sure what you a referring to as a '95. Unless this was built in Mexico, I seriously doubt any thing on it is from '95. Maybe rebuilt in '95
4) You have a BJ front
5) That IS NOT fuel injected. You have a carburetor. Perhaps a electric fuel pump, I can't tell from the pic's.
6) Interesting dizzy you have tho. Never seen one quite like that.

Let me try to answer as best I can.
1) I'm not that well versed on size of engine you may have viewing the pic but I bet some one here can

Sorry. I had a DUH moment. After I posted that I noticed your location. Rolling Eyes

I've not done a swing to IRS conversion but it can be done. The mounts are a little different. I believe some of the after market stores sell a jig (and brackets) to help with alignment. In fact I "believe" Bugzilla sells a jig as well.
With that said, why bother? There are pros and cons to both trans types. It depends on how it will be used and abused.

i will probably not abuse it much, no racing, no jumping, just daily offroading, not extreme, just offroad meaning no pavement Surprised oh and tomorrow i might go to the beach, but that aside, nothing extreme Smile

i guess ill just keep it that way until it fails or something Very Happy

can i fix the toe in issue though? i REALLY dont like it looking that way :/
i have KYB gas-a-justs but i dont know what to do :/

Look just below your generator/alternator on the engine case. There should be some letters and numbers. You may have to wipe it off a bit to see them. Then you can post it or look up the engine number to see what it is (if the previous owner didn't rebuild it and made it bigger.)

You dont' have EFI. That looks like a Solex carburetor. Possibly an electric fuel pump as I don't see a mechanical anywhere near the distributor. Not sure what distributor you have as I haven't seen one of those.

The camber on the rear wheels is normal for a VW especially swingaxles. Drive it until it breaks then think about switching over to an IRS.

A Rickman said, it's normal for swing axles. The more you increase height, the more camber you get. No real problem other than some weird wear on the tires but only if you run pavement a lot, which you said you wouldn't.
I'd run it as is until it breaks then switch them out.

x2 on the numbers to determine the engine.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one to spot the unusual dizzy.

if its a true mexican beetle,they are kind of a cross between differant year bugs,they mated diffent parts from diffent yrs,,,,,,it would be interesting on what you find out,,i think the last yr for sb was 74 here then they just made the vert here till 79 ,so it might very well be a 95,,,,hummmmm? Any way,,,,run what ya brung,,,,til it brakes,,then build big,,,better,,,

that distributor is an HEI out of a chevy vega or monza or something similar. I have the same set up on my baja. As long as its machined to fit right and doesn't wiggle around in there, its a good one to have. No problem with not having spark. You should always have fire with that dizzy.

size is impossible to find unless you take the heads off and do some measuring(as far as I know)

btw, swingaxle does pretty darn good. The fewer parts there are to break the better. Hey even Jeff Hibbard said "parts left out cause no problems and cost nothing". you might end up on your lid a little quicker with swing if you drive really hard though
