Name's Chris. I'm new to the the baja/sandrail scene but not to VW's. I've been in Volkswagens for the past 6 years or so owning a really nice lowered '65 bug with a pretty built 1776. After a trip to Glamis with some friends, I decided to get a rail and try out the offroad/sand world. I'm not completely new to the dirt world, having a bunch of friends into rock crawling and helping a buddy build a full on trail rig. I bought a 2 seat vw based rail. Not sure of the frame. (doesn't look like bugpack or any of the other popular frames out there) The engine is a stock 40hp with swing axle. Swapped in my 1776 for all of 5 mins before the oil pump went out and the motor seized up. Im currently in the process of building a 2110 right now. I'm also planning on an IRS swap with a Ecotec in the next year or so. I'm looking forward to learning more about these cars and hopefully see you guys out in the sand! On to some pics

Chris your rail looks great it has alot of nice additions already on it.

If you get that 2110 jetted and tuned right you might not need the ecotec, but no such thing as to much Horsepower.

Also, thats a very clean street bug!

Thanks! Ya, I'm sure that 2110 will be more than I can handle for a while. Id really like to put the 2110 in the bug eventually and have a turbo ecotec in the rail, bc like you said, there is no such thing at to much HP Twisted Evil

Welcome to AzBaja. Nice rides. The cheapest most fun I ever had in my rail was when it had a stock engine. One really has to try to get into trouble as the lack of spped gives one time to think. Smile . Before you build a larger engine make sure your transaxle, suspension and brakes are up to it. Also don't fall for the bigger the cam the better. Any cam with much more duration than an Engle W 110 style requires gearing to match the power band.

Thanks for the advice!! The rail is a blast right now with the 40hp. When I do the motor, Im also going to tear into the trans. I've built motors, but haven't torn into a transaxle yet, so it should be a good learning experience. Gonna put in a super diff, hd side plate, harden keys and shift forks. Maybe mess with the gearing. I need to do more research to figure that one out. This trans just need to last me the season, then its going in the street bug and a 6 rib bus trans is going into the rail when I do the IRS swap next year.

As for the motor, its going to be pretty mild build. So far I have an AS-41 case, full flowed cut for 90.5's. Dual DLRA 40's. 043 heads that are ported and polished. 55cc combustion chambers. With a .060 deck, C/R should be around 9:1. However, I may end up building a 1955cc for budget reasons. Unsure about what cam I want to run. I understand that bigger isn't better form past vw motors and my engine builder.

I'm thinking your car is a home made job.

I know most people do not think about it. You should put in a second U-Joint at the top of the steering shaft. If for what ever reason you do get hit or hit somthing at speed you will not get that long steel spear ramed into the center of your chest.

The front shocks have crazy long springs on them. It also looks like the shocks are on upsidedown. Shaft should come out the bottom not top. Most emulsion type shocks can be mounted either way. but for off road you want to keep the side with the fluid of the suspension. Or you will have a home made cocktail shacker and could get shock fade as the shock body boucnes around with the suspension. Last you need to tie the two shock towers to gether with some sort of brace. I few people have bent shock mounts like yours in the past.
