Editorial Review:
A family inherits an elegant steel-and-glass mansion from a deceased relative. The catch is that along with the house comes a slew of ghosts that can be seen only through special goggles.
Cool sets, gory make-up, and frantic energy are given high priority in this glossy remake of William Castle's 1960 haunted-house chiller. The original boasted its "Illusion-O" ghost-viewing gimmick, so this remake's producers--as they did with 1999's The House on Haunted Hill--up the ante on Castle's showmanship by spilling ample amounts of blood, guts, and ghoulish glory. The plot's essentially the same: An impoverished family inherits a luxurious haunted mansion, only this time it's an elaborate, maze-like mechanism of glass, gears, and Latin incantations--"designed by the devil and powered by the dead"--with a cellar full of tormented, undead souls. As the family (including Tony Shalhoub and American Pie's Shannon Elizabeth) enlists the aid of a psychic (Scream alumnus Matthew Lillard) and a ghostbusting paranormal (Embeth Davidtz), this updated 13 Ghosts grows loud and ludicrous, trading shocks for yuks and nuance for nonsense. It's fun, to a point, after which it's just exhausting. --Jeff Shannon

Summary: Mind numbingly awful...
Comment: I'm all for scary movies, but this one is just ridiculously bad. Sure, the set is stylish, but the manic way in which the film is presented is preposterous and obnoxious and downright annoying. It's funny to me when people try and describe the plot, like it matters. "The film is about a struggling family who inherits a strange...yada-yada-yada." Seriously, this film doesn't deserve a synopsis. I once wrote a review detailing 13 reasons to turn this movie off and I stand by every one of them. This movie is annoying, it isn't scary, it is STUPID (yes, with all capital letters), the acting is atrocious and Shannon Elizabeth keeps her top on. The house, I digress, is kind of cool (conceptually) but the gimmick wares out its welcome when it has nothing of substantial weight to back it up. The ghosts are more clichéd and ridiculous than actually scary and the comical overtones to this film make it appear more of a campy D-grade `straight to DVD' type film with absolutely no real redeeming factors. Matthew Lillard sets a new standard for bad acting with his over-the-top theatrics (I'm so glad he never really turned into a big star). With one of the worst opening scenes I've ever seen put to film, this trashy remake of a 60's film I've never seen remains a skid mark on my cinematic viewing pleasure.

Comment: The condition of this movie was great, but I ordered new so I expected that. I would have liked to have known that the case on this movie would be a peper-like case with a side clasp to open it.

Comment: This movie has some jump factor in it. The special effects are good and I think the story line is good.
